Eat an Egg a Day? Here are the Effects on Your Body and Your Health

Should we eat an egg a day?

A good fried egg, baked or poached for breakfast on Sunday morning is always a pleasure. Yet we are often warned about the cholesterol content of eggs. So, is it healthy to eat an egg a day? What are the effects of the egg on the body and what are its health benefits?

Cholesterol

Eggs contain cholesterol. Our bodies need this fatty substance because it is essential for the production of hormones, bile and cells, among others. Much of the cholesterol we need is made by our body itself, in the liver. The rest of the cholesterol we need comes from the foods we eat. Too excessive cholesterol increases the risk of cardiovascular disease. Therefore, the recommended daily intake of cholesterol is 300 milligrams.

Recommended daily allowance

The yolk of an egg already contains about 200 milligrams of cholesterol, while the white of an egg is free from this substance. You will have noticed that by eating an egg yolk, you have already almost reached your recommended daily intake of cholesterol. If you eat an egg a day and no other product containing this substance, you will be fine. But butter, cheese, margarine,  fatty meats and all kinds of snacks also contain cholesterol. You can therefore eat one egg a day, as long as you ensure that the rest of your diet is balanced.
